Dog training is holistic. In correcting training and behavioural problems we need to look at the whole dog - physical, mental and spiritual. To calm an unruly dog is one thing, to calm an unruly dog and train it be reliable in obedience exercises is quite different. Unfortunately dog training, like many subjects, is often captured and hijacked by "trendy ideas" and pushed for all its worth by the writers - usually for financial gain. We see numerous books vigorously pushing food training, clicker training, association training, forceful physical training and books just on the spiritual aspect of dogs.
My belief is that the dog must be trained from the inside out. Until we can grasp the fact that the dog is in our lives for a reason that perhaps can only be explained by God. And that the dog is a living, breathing emotional creature with an independent mind and is on the Universe for a very good reason. Not simply a decoration in our yards or as a fluffy or cuddly toy, a child substitute or as in the case of the more aggressive breeds - an extension of our macho egos.
Unless one can appreciate the unique qualities of our canine friends: unless one enjoys the company of our canine friends and get pleasure from their sometimes comical or otherwise sweet little ways: unless one loves their canine companion and understands that they truly enrich our lives - the holistic training of a dog does not even begin
