ROSS ALLAN K9 CONCEPTS 2 August 2000 RESIGNATION FROM THE RSPCA I am a life member of the RSPCA and have been so for a number of years. After much soul searching I have decided to resign my life membership. The reasons are numerous but the bottom line is that this organization is not the one of which I was proud to be a member, but is now an impracticable organization controlled by self cantered and self interested people leaving the animals out in the cold. As a professional dog trainer of 30 years experience my agenda has continually widened from the agenda of the RSPCA. I believe in rehabilitation of dogs, not in killing them. I am concerned with obedience training and often the rehabilitation of badly behaved dogs therefore, I can not be part of an organization that runs a policy of mass genocide of dogs. I understand that the RSPCA kills about 85%of surrendered dog ’s - which is horrific and certainly cannot be justified. The fact that the RSPCA vehemently opposes the use of corrective disciplinary measures such as the use of choke chains in training for instance, is astonishing. Particularly when they are used by esteemed dog training establishments such as the Police, Military, Corrective Services, Guide Dog Trainers and dog obedience trailing competitors. The final straw came with me when I saw a Dr. Hugh Writh on television last night blasting the use of shock training collars. These collars have been particularly successful in rehabilitating strong willed badly behaved dogs in very short time, proving themselves to be incredibly effective and humane with dogs that otherwise may have been put down. Or perhaps confined to a small house yard or surrendered to the RSPCA where it will most probably be destroyed, rather than becoming social creatures with a new and wonderful life. Any so called humane animal organization that advocates mass genocide of dogs rather than swift corrective measures is a shame and a disgrace. There is swift and positive discipline in the dog, wolf or dingo pack far more aggressive than any reprimand from a choke chain or device emitting a light shock. Any educated person understands that dogs are descended from the wolf and therefore retains about 80%of the wolf ’s instincts. This includes the dog being a pack-structured animal and unless it respects the owner it takes charge. Many people are quite simply not strong enough to control "hard or dominant " dogs and need the assistance of correctional devices. So what ’s next, if we can ’t control the child take it to the Doctor and get it killed legally? What ’s the difference? Certainly if we lived in a perfect world we wouldn't have to resort to corrective measures but until the dog changes its inherent instincts to take charge of the human pack, the power players of the RSPCA have to get back into the real world. People who shouldn’t have dogs will always have dogs until people themselves are licensed rather than the dogs registered. But then there many people who obviously shouldn’t have children still do have them. At the end of the day the people who push this phoney romantic policy advocating and pushing the mass execution of our canine friends rather than rehabilitation, should be recorded in history as the Nazis SS is recorded in history -mass murders. The obedience training programs coming out of the RSPCA are largely ineffective and a disgrace. As a consequence, there is one very large Brisbane Pet Shop I am aware of that does not display of promote RSPCA material due to the bad name that it has earned. It is my great pleasure to resign from an organization that is increasingly cold blooded, largely lacking in common sense and devoid of compassion for Gods beautiful creature - the descendent of the grey wolf.
